Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the MEXT Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Nationality: Must be a citizen of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan.
  2. Age: Born on or after April 2, 1990 (exceptions apply for specific cases such as military service obligations).
  3. Academic Background:
    • For master’s programs: 16 years of formal education.
    • For doctoral programs: A master’s degree or equivalent research experience.
  4. Field of Study: Must align with the applicant’s academic background and be available at Japanese universities.
  5. Health: A medical certificate confirming the applicant’s fitness is required.
  6. Language Proficiency: A willingness to learn Japanese and ability to conduct research in Japanese or English.

Application Dates and Process

  1. Application Period: April–May 2025 (exact deadlines vary by country).

  2. First Screening (May–July 2025):
    Conducted by Japanese embassies and consulates, including: Document review, language proficiency tests (Japanese and English), and personal interviews.
  1. Provisional Acceptance: Applicants who pass the first screening must request letters of provisional acceptance from Japanese universities. Requests should be made by August 9, 2025.
  2. Final Screening and Results (October 2025–February 2026):
